New Orleans Locations
"... a band of assassins... cut down the upstart and the harem girls he had 'defiled' "
- The Times-Picayune, 1979
Miscellaneous
Armed & Dangerous, 539 Dumaine St. This small shop sells a wide variety of lovely goth-friendly jewelry, including what appears to be a large chunk of Alchemy Gothic`s line. Good quality stuff abounds, in pewter, silver, etc. Big Life Toys, 3117 Magazine St, Uptown & 5430 Magazine St, farther Uptown. Two locations worth of toys for big kids. The one at 5430 Magazine is larger; the one at 3117 magazine has more adult-oriented stuff. Big Life Toys carries a good amount of Sanrio stuff, kitsch like Nuzilla, and Betty Page memorabilia. Fun for Perky Goths.
Cathedral, 225 N. Peters St. Looking for a large crucifix to wear out, aprint of the bleeding heart of jesus, or a nice statue of the Virgin Mary for your living room? Then this is the shop for you. Cathedral is a place solely devoted to the sale of gothic / religious objects. Catholic guilt at its finest.
Esoterica, 541 Dumaine St. is a fairly non-touristy occult supply store with a fairly friendly staff. Candles, incense, tarot decks, and all your occult needs. They do readings, too.
Fifi Mahony`s, 828 Chartres St. After oohing and aahing all over the vintage clothing at Trashy Diva, you might want to pop across the Street to Fifi Mahony`s. All manner of wigs, in all manner of styles and all manner of colors are sold there at reasonable prices. Everything from a simple black Louis Brooks bob to a towering Marie Antoinette in bright purple. Once you have your Do on, turn your attention to the makeup and hairdye at Fifi´s - their selection may stop the heart of any self-respecting glittergoth or drag-queen! Products from Ben Nye, Makeup for Ever, Sweet Georgia Brown, Urban Decay, Fudge and more.
Marie Laveau`s House of Voodoo, 739 Bourbon St. This place is touristy as hell, and you`ll have to brave Bourbon Street, but the House of Voodoo is the best place in the city to find cheap rosaries. They also have spooky masks, tarot cards, voodoo items in general, and many skull-themed things. (I´m typing this whilst sitting next to my much-beloved 2 ˝ foot tall painted statue of the voodoo god of death, gotten for $15.00!) Oh, and the House of Voodoo also does tarot readings...
Masquerade Fantasy, 1233 Decatur St #1 sells handmade, hand-painted, beautiful leather masks. Most of the masks end below the nose or just above it, and range from the intricate to the simple, the pretty to the grotesque. The shop is definitely worth a look, especially for those visiting around Mardi Gras and / or Halloween. Prices start at $30, but I`ve bartered the price down successfully with the owner in the past. (Masks are goth, right? Sure they are...)
Rings of Desire, 1128 Decatur St. is the most oft-praised and recommended piercing studio in the New Orleans area. You can choose several different price levels of piercers, from Novice to Master, to suit your price range. The facilities are very clean, the staff are personable and knowledgeble, and lasty – you must see the air – conditioning system. It`s shaped like a giant spider.
St. Germain, 1200 Decatur St. A gothic variety store. St. Germain stocks incense, candles, jewelry, essential oils, books, clothing, knick-knacks, cigarettes, and a small but important array of hard-to-find gothic & industrial CDs. You should also go to this shop if you are interested in attending The Convent, as talking to St. Germain`s proprietors is a good way to get an invitation.
The Anne Rice Collection, Inside The Rink (corner of Prytania Street & Washington Ave.). Master of Self-Promotion (oh, and vampire writer, too). Anne Rice now has her very own retail store. Books, of course – as well as all other things Rice-releated.
The Gothic Shop,830 Royal St. That`s „gothic“ in the architectural sense, but this matters not. All you need to know is that this shop sells gothic statuary, factory direct and very, very inexpensive. Satyrs, gargoyles, grotesques, pillars, angels, cherubs, devils, and the odd bust of Beethoven. In the form of statues, wall pieces, candleholders – even mirrors. Just go. Now. You`ll thank me, really you will.
The New Orleans Flea Market, Nahe des Farmer Marktes hinter der Decatur Street im French Quarter. Not gothic, but I`m putting it in anyway. This is a great place to find cheap sunglasses, jewelry, zippos, clothes, and almost anything else under the sun. Best of all, the name of the game is The Barter System, so don`t go accepting the price they tell you! The Flea Market is an open-air market operating as part of the French Market, located behind Decatur Street next to the river and near Esplanade Avenue, open seven days a week. Wonderful for picking up odds & ends very cheaply.
Voodoo Museum, 724 Dumaine St. The New Orleans Voodoo Museum ia a regular stop on many of the city´s tours, but if you´d rather not shell out for a guided excursion, you can always go solo to the museum, and learn all you wanted to know about the practice of Voodoo, historical and current.
